Marvel at the majestic landscapes these composers depicted and also at the unique voices and colours they achieved. Sibelius, the grand old man of Scandinavian music, wrote monumental symphonies, often likened to the fjords themselves. His Finlandia is one the greatest and most stirring examples of nationalist music composed to arouse patriotic fervour, but Sibelius was still able to write miniature works full of wit and humour, such as his Humoresques for Violin and orchestra. Edvard Grieg, perhaps the most beloved of all Nordic composers, wrote music bursting with lyrical beauty.
