The Orchestra

“A great orchestra uplifts the sounds of the every day, beckoning people to share the exaltation of great music.” Johannes Fritzsch, Chief Conductor, Queensland Symphony Orchestra

Queensland Symphony Orchestra, under the guiding baton of Chief Conductor Johannes Fritzsch, is renowned for its high quality, breath-taking performances of both classical and modern compositions that engage audiences of all musical tastes, interests and ages.

As the largest performing arts company in Queensland employing 88 full-time musicians and the state’s only professional symphony orchestra, Queensland Symphony Orchestra plays a vital role in Queensland’s cultural community, giving over 100 live performances across 47 weeks each year to more than 100,000 people.

Queensland Symphony Orchestra’s annual season attracts high-profile international and national artists and is made up of seven contrasting concert series featuring everything from Beethoven to the Proms, plus a number of Special Events supporting high calibre artists such as Ben Lee, José Carreras and Roberta Flack.

Each year, the Orchestra also undertakes a regional tour delivering a free community engagement program and conducts an extensive state-wide education program that connects with 30,000 students, from pre-school to university level.

The Orchestra also presents innovative corporate workshops engaging the business sector to think outside of the box about leadership and team work.

In addition to its own program, Queensland Symphony Orchestra performs for major arts festivals, direct broadcasts and recordings, and supports state and national opera and ballet companies.

“The most striking element of this concert was the unified purpose of conductor and orchestra and the electrifying partnership between them… The Queensland Symphony Orchestra was well and truly in the zone, even before the first note.”
Gillian Wills - The Australian 28 June 2011

“This was wholehearted playing from top to bottom, with terrific ensemble and security of intonation, built on a foundation of a solid string tone and electrifying brass. It’s an orchestra that, all year, has maintained this advanced level of competence.”
Martin Buzacott - The Australian 18 June 2012

“It is both challenging and rewarding to develop a relationship with an orchestra. I feel that the QSO and I have established a very positive musical communication. I always look forward to working with this excellent orchestra.”
Eivind Aadland, Principal Guest Conductor 2012

“It’s a first-rate orchestra: incredibly quick and very expressive and musical. I felt very supported; it was a real dialogue I could have with the orchestra. It was a fantastic concert and I’m so happy it’s happening again.”
Sergio Tiempo, pianist - Brisbane News 28 March 2012
