Bernstein Candide Overture
Gershwin Piano Concerto in F
Dvoràk Symphony No.9 From the New World
Leonard Bernstein's Candide Overture is the musical equivalent of opening a bottle of champagne, while George Gershwin's Piano Concerto in F radiates all the confidence and brashness of 1920s New York, with art deco skyscrapers and dazzling neon signs. Piers Lane, who regularly inspires the critics, performs this concerto, a spectacularly successful marriage of jazz-inspired idiom and classical form. However much Dvoràk may have been captivated by the big sky and wide open prairies of the US when he wrote his New World symphony, the lilt and freshness of this most beloved symphony tell us that his heart and soul remained in his native Bohemia.
