John Longmuir

One of Australia’s most acclaimed young tenors, John Longmuir was born in Edinburgh, Scotland.  His operatic studies took place at the Australian Opera Studio.

John’s awards encompass all of Australia's major Eisteddfods and competitions, having won the Herald Sun Aria, the Opera and Arts Support Group scholarship and the inaugural Joan Sutherland and Richard Bonynge Bel Canto Award.  Other prizes include the Royal Schools Music Competition, the McDonalds Operatic Aria, Opera Foundation Australia's AUDI German Award, the More than Opera German-Australian Opera Grant and the Australian National Eisteddfod.

In 2011, John was invited to join Opera Australia’s young artist program - making his debut as Almaviva in the The Barber of Seville. Whilst in the program, John’s other roles included Camille in The Merry Widow, Italian Singer in Capriccio, Ballad Singer in Of Mice and Men, Tamino in The Magic Flute and Snout in A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Since finishing the program, John has sung all the major leggiero repertoire for Opera Australia including: Tamino, Almaviva, Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore, Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni, Ernesto in Don Pasquale, Pong in Turandot, Fenton in Falstaff, Emilio in Partenope, Nadir in Les pecheurs de perles and Narcisco in Il Turco in Italia.  He has also appeared with West Australian Opera as Almaviva.

Also in demand on the concert platform, John’s appearances have included Messiah with Royal Melbourne Philharmonic, Rossini's Stabat Mater with West Australian Symphony Orchestra, Carmina Burana at the New National Theatre in Tokyo, Israel in Egypt with the Berliner Cappella, Belshazzar for the Willoughby Symphony Orchestra, Faure’s La Naissance de Venus at the Konzerthaus Berlin and numerous appearances for the International Foundation for Arts and Culture in Tokyo, Japan.   In 2012 and 2014, he was invited by Richard Bonynge to appear as Grimoaldo in concert performances of Rodelinda - now available as a commercial recording.

In 2016, John Longmuir sings Nadir (Les pecheurs de perles) for West Australian Opera and Tamino (The Magic Flute) and Pong (Turandot) for Opera Australia.
