Marialy Pacheco

Pianist and composer Marialy Pacheco belongs to the most talented Cuban musicians of her generation.

Born in Cuba (Havana, 1983) Marialy was raised in a musical family and began piano studies from an early age at the Alejandro García Caturla Conservatorium. At 15, she attended the Escuela Nacional de Artes, followed by 3 years of composition studies under Tulio Peramo at the Instituto Superior de Artes de la Habana.

In 2002, she won the Cuban competition Jo-Jazz, with Grammy award-winner Chucho Valdes presiding over the jury, and in 2004 recorded her first album Bendiciones.

Relocating to Germany she continued to tour Europe and build her international reputation.

She was invited three consecutive years to perform in Festival Son Cuba, a Cuban performance that celebrates Cuban traditional music and tours Europe annually, as well as touring extensively throughout Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Netherlands, both as a solo pianist and with her trio.

In 2006, she was awarded the Second Prize at Choral Gables Congregational Church Florida for her work for string orchestra “Güajira para Tulio”. In 2008, she was a guest soloist at concerts in Germany with Australian legendary guitarist Tommy Emmanuel. Marialy Pacheco was awarded 1st Prize at the 2012 Parmigiani Montreux Jazz solo piano Competition in Switzerland and in the same year she wan the Jazz Award at the 2012 Queensland Music Awards for her work for Jazz Trio “Dresden”.

She has released five independent albums including her third solo piano CD “Songs That I Love” (her first Australian release) with all tracks recorded in one take over three hours at the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts in Brisbane on 16th December 2010. Marialy is a Permanent Australian resident who has lived in Brisbane, Australia since November 2009.
