Don Quixote

For those with an advanced level of music knowledge. Engage in the full concert hall experience and enjoy the power of the full symphonic repertoire and internationally renowned conductors and soloists.

Nowadays, most of us are familiar with the idea of a remix. A song is released and then gets released in several alternative versions. The 19th century equivalent of a remix was the theme and variations – where a composer would take a tune and present it in increasingly complex and brilliant variations.

In this concert, cellist Narek Hakhnazaryan will be performing two of these theme and variations with us. Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme was a set of variations on a light, elaborate theme which is beautiful in its own right. But we will pair it with the even more versatile Don Quixote by Richard Strauss, where the cellist takes on the character of Don Quixote, the nobleman who deludes himself into thinking he is a knight.
