Queensland Symphony Orchestra breaks records for a sensational start to the New Year

Media Release ·

Queensland Symphony Orchestra (QSO) will open a sensational 2015 Season after closing 2014 with history-making Box Office results for its Mainstage Series and special events.

QSO Chief Executive Officer Sophie Galaise announced the Orchestra’s 2014 Maestro concert series achieved ticket sales well in excess of $1 million, representing nearly 40% growth on the previous year.

“This is an incredibly important milestone for the QSO,” she said. “Audiences responded overwhelmingly to not only QSO’s critically acclaimed Maestro Series in 2014, but to the entire season, which was very exciting.”

“2014 Maestro attendances grew by more than 25%, and we say bravo to our audiences for supporting their Queensland orchestra. This success will ensure that the QSO can continue to present its world class performance program to audiences of all ages in Brisbane and across communities throughout regional Queensland.”

QSO opens 2015 on February 7 with the Queensland premiere of the blockbuster event Star Trek, Live in Concert. This stunning and internationally applauded musical event will see J.J. Abrams’ first Star Trek film screened in high definition on the big screen at Brisbane’s Royal International Convention Centre, with Academy Award®-winning composer Michael Giacchino’s score performed live by the QSO.

The Orchestra commences its 2015 mainstage season on Valentine’s Day, February 14, with the Ode to Joy Opening Gala. This concert features Beethoven’s famed Symphony No.9 Choral and the world premiere of Gordon Hamilton’s The Trillion Souls, a commissioned work dedicated to the memory of British mathematician Alan Turing.

Then on February 19, QSO launches its new WorldBeat Series in Brisbane City Hall with (Not) The Last Night of the Proms, a riotous night of popular classics, patriotism and British Pomp and Circumstance.

Ms Galaise said QSO’s 2015 Season, following the strong momentum of the previous year, is well on the way to sell-out success.

“Our ‘Superstar Collection’ for 2015 brings the absolute crème de la crème of classical music to Brisbane, featuring guest artists including Maxim Vengerov, Simone Young, Mischa Maisky, Sarah Chang, Pinchas Zukerman and QSO’s first ever (and Australia’s first) Soloist-in-Residence, Shlomo Mintz.”
