Associate Concertmaster

Permanent Full-time position

Exceptional musicians are invited to apply for the role of Associate Concertmaster with Queensland Symphony Orchestra.

Remuneration:  Salary range of AUD$101,615 - $106,238 per annum plus 11% superannuation (increasing to 11.5% on I July 2024). QSO also provides a comprehensive instrument insurance scheme, plus instrument upkeep and clothing allowances. The Orchestra enjoys generous leave entitlements that include five weeks annual leave plus a paid mid-year break of a minimum of seven days.

Eligibility:  

This position is open to Australian and New Zealand citizens and those with Australian permanent residency status.


Tenure:

Permanent full time, subject to successful completion of a 6-month trial period


Section Structure:

The First Violin section will be comprised of one Concertmaster position, two Associate Concertmasters, one Principal First Violin and 10 Tutti First Violins

Selection Process

Interested musicians are encouraged to submit a CV with relevant experience.

Applicants shortlisted for an audition will receive details regarding the audition after the closing date. Exceptional candidates may be invited straight to a pre-trial, in which case a recent video recording of solo and/or chamber music (5 mins) may be requested.

Following the audition, the top ranked candidates from the audition and those directly considered may be invited for a pre-trial.

The pre-trial will include two to three weeks of orchestral performances and a short recital that will include an excerpt of a Mozart concerto, own choice piece (or part thereof) between 5-8 minutes, orchestral excerpts and may include playing some chamber music.

Applicants selected for live audition, but unable to attend, will be encouraged to submit a recorded audition and will be provided with the requirements. An accompanist will be provided for live auditions.

Audition Requirements

Set works (to be played with piano accompaniment)

1. Mozart Concerto G, D or A, first and second movements including cadenza

2. Concerto or major work for violin and orchestra 19th or 20th century, first movement only and cadenza if applicable

Excerpts (to be played solo)

Position Description

General Duties

The general duties and work requirements of an Associate Concertmaster are to:

  • work in accordance with the terms of the QSO Musicians Agreement
  • play the instrument for which the musician was auditioned.

Additional Duties

In addition to the duties of Section musician and a Section Principal musician, the Associate Concertmaster will also:

  • sit next to the Concertmaster or in other positions as agreed with the Concertmaster
  • lead the orchestra and assume the performing duties of Concertmaster in his/her absence or as required
  • prepare and play relevant repertoire solos in consultation with the Concertmaster
  • be available to cover for the Concertmaster in an emergency for all programs whether or not rostered for the program
  • take responsibility for tuning the orchestra when required by the Concertmaster and
  • participate in monitoring the musical standard of the orchestra
