PUCCINI's passion strikes a high note with Queensland Symphony Orchestra's Opera Gala

Fall under the spell of the passion, scandal, and ecstasy of Giacomo Puccini's timeless operas as Queensland Symphony Orchestra (QSO) presents two electrifying performances in QPAC's Concert Hall on Friday 9 March and Saturday 10 March.

Under the baton of guest conductor Maestro Giordano Bellincampi, accompanied by the world-class musicians, QSO will take the national lead in a grand celebration to mark the 100th anniversary of the death of Giacomo Puccini at this year’s Opera Gala.

Audiences will be enchanted by soprano Sae-Kyung Rim, tenor Kang Wang and baritone Phillip Rhodes, as they guide guests through the intimacy of Puccini's arias while QSO’s full orchestra delivers a performance that promises to captivate and enthral.

Brisbane-based multigenerational community choir, Voices of Birralee, will join the ensemble with 80 singers atop the rear choir stores creating a truly breathtaking experience.

Maestro Giordano Bellincampi said he is extremely excited to again share the stage with the wonderful QSO, stellar cast and chorus to present the genius of Giacomo Puccini.

“Throughout the concert, we will experience Puccini’s unique ability to write music that goes directly into our hearts and souls, always,” said Mr Bellincampi.

“We have a sparkling selection from all of his stage works, from the young composer’s first opera Le Villi to the experienced master’s last, unfinished opera, Turandot.

“Join us for musical moments of laughter, innocent love, jealousy, passion and joy in a selection of Puccini’s masterworks including La Boheme, Tosca and Madama Butterfly.”

QSO Chief Executive Yarmila Alfonzetti said the Opera Gala is a vibrant celebration of Puccini's legacy that will resonate deeply with audiences.

"Collaborating with leading operatic talent and esteemed conductor Giordano Bellincampi, alongside the Voices of Birralee this gala event will come to life in a way that's both profound and exhilarating," said Ms Alfonzetti.

“It's a privilege to delve into Puccini's extraordinary world, bringing his stories to life for both devoted followers and newcomers.

“Alongside countless international festivals and concerts in 2024 dedicated to the timeless music of this great composer, QSO has created an unmissable occasion which will ensure this centenary performance can take its place in the worldwide-up of special events.”

Opera Gala is part of Queensland Symphony Orchestra’s dedication to bringing music to communities across Queensland.

From vibrant urban centres to remote regions, QSO strives to entertain, share the joy of music, and foster a deeper appreciation for music through performances, tours and educational initiatives across the state.
